Review: Head & Shoulders $50 Giveaway

My family suffers greatly from dry skin, and it gets really bad during winter. The moment the heater is turned on, we all start to shrivel and flake. Finding the right remedies for our skin and hair is always a challenge, especially since none of us want to smell like a medicine cabinet.

When I was offered the chance to review Head & Shoulders Eucalyptus Itchy Scalp Care products I thought that would be a perfect fit for us. Here’s some facts I’ve learned about the scalp.

Did you now that one of factors of dandruff is a fungus? I did not know this. The fungus is called Malassezia globosa, combined with the oils in the scalp the fungus irritates the skin, and then you just have a mess of a head that’s itchy, red and flaking. I decided to give the Head and Shoulders products a try on my entire family to see if we noticed a difference in our dry heads.

Don’t worry! The shampoo did not cause my boys to be weirdos, they were like that well before we tried any products in their hair.

What We All Liked

I really like the light, fresh smell of both the shampoo and conditioner. They do not smell like the Head & Shoulders my dad used when I was a little girl. Even as an adult, I avoided using any sort of medicated shampoo because the smell is too medicinal. This Head & Shoulders smell wonderful, clean, not over powering at all.

I liked the consistency of the shampoo; some dandruff shampoos don’t have the sudsy feel, but this does. It lathers quickly and rinses. My husband and boys all commented that they thought they were using regular shampoo.

I love that there is a conditioner to follow the shampoo! I must have both; it is an absolute must. I can’t shampoo without following with conditioner or my head will fall off, I’m sure of it. I can feel the softness on my hands after I’ve used both the products; it’s obvious that Head & Shoulders works on dry skin.

What I Didn’t Like

I don’t think my hair was quite ready for this much conditioner. My hair was super shiny, but also a bit too soft and conditioned. I had flat hair, not to be confused with oily hair; it was just flat. I will use these products again in December and January when I’m a shriveled prune and my skin is starting to leave a trail of dust behind me and my hair is electrified and my scalp is itchy from dryness.

Now, for you readers, one of you will win a $50 Visa gift card, courtesy of BlogHer! For a chance to win, just leave me a comment telling me how you change your beauty or skin care routine during the winter months.

Review: Hellman’s makes a turkey at Coal Creek Farm and a $100 prize for you!

Raise your hand if you’ve prepared a lot of turkeys in your life? Now keep your hand up if any of those turkeys were dry, and the only way to get your family to eat it was to disguise it as a platform to hold mashed potatoes and gravy. I have made my share of dry turkey and then spent the good part of a week throwing the turkey in soups and casseroles and then eventually giving it to the dog.

Hellmann’s® is on a mission to help moms re-think main dish meals and leftovers by offering easy, delicious recipes great for the busy holiday season, such as Turkey Casserole and chef Bobby Flay’s “Stuffing” Crusted Turkey Cutlets.

I was assigned to try the Super Moist Roasted Turkey recipe using Hellmann’s® Real Mayonnaise, and at first I thought, “Ew, gross.” But I take it all back; I think this is one of the best turkeys I’ve ever made.

And guess what?

It’s super easy. I made this recipe late at night after we had returned from being out of town for four days. I pulled it out of the oven at exactly 12:35am. So if I can do this while trying to recover from vacation exhaustion, then just think how easy it would be to make during a normal time of day.

How do I know it was good? Because this morning, my kids asked if it was okay to take the turkey for their lunch, and after they were done cutting into it, half of the turkey was gone. My husband also decided he would rather have turkey for breakfast than cereal.

Hellmann’s® transformed a boring turkey into something quite wonderful. This turkey has a crispy skin and juicy meat. The seasonings combined with the Hellmann’s® are used as a rub under the breast skin and over the entire turkey, which gives a subtle flavor without overpowering the taste of turkey.

I will make this turkey for Thanksgiving this year for sure. Here’s the recipe for you to try, I used fresh sage, salt and pepper to season my turkey.

SUPER MOIST ROASTED TURKEY

8 servings

Prep Time: 15 minutes

Cook Time: 3 hours

Stand Time: 20 minutes

10- to 12-lb. fresh whole turkey or frozen whole turkey, thawed

1 cup Hellmann’s® or Best Foods® Real Mayonnaise

1 large shallot or onion, chopped

1 Tbsp. chopped fresh rosemary, sage and/or thyme*

1 envelope Knorr® Roasted Turkey gravy mix, prepared according to package directions

Preheat oven to 425°.

Remove giblets from turkey cavities and rinse turkey inside and out; pat dry with paper towels. Season, if desired, with salt and freshly ground black pepper; set aside.

Combine Hellmann’s® or Best Foods® Real Mayonnaise, shallot and herbs in medium bowl; set aside.

Starting at neck opening, gently loosen skin on turkey and evenly spread 1/2 of the mayonnaise mixture under skin.

Tie legs together with kitchen string.

Arrange turkey, breast side up, in large shallow roasting pan with rack; rub remaining mayonnaise mixture over outside of turkey.

Tent with heavy-duty aluminum foil.

Decrease oven to 325° and roast turkey 1-1/2 hours.

Remove foil and continue roasting, about 1 hour, basting occasionally with pan juices, until thermometer inserted in thickest part of the thigh reaches 180°.

Let stand covered loosely with foil 20 minutes before carving.

Serve with hot Knorr® Roasted Turkey gravy.

*SUBSTITUTION: Use 1 tsp. dried rosemary, sage and/or thyme, crushed.

Review: Bounce Dryer Bar and Chance to Win $50 Visa Card

I’m not a fan of dryer sheets. That’s a pretty big statement considering I decided to sign up to do a review for the new Bounce Dryer Bar.

But, the bar is not a sheet.

A pile of laundry at Coal Creek Farm is an everyday sight.

I’ve been using the Bounce Dryer Bar for about a week now and I like it a lot. I don’t have to remember to stick anything in the dryer, I don’t have to worry about finding the sheet sticking out of my pant leg as I’m walking around in public and I have one less product taking up space on my laundry shelf. The Bounce Dryer Bar sticks to the inside of the dryer and does its job without me having to do anything. I simply stuck it to the inside of my dryer drum and walked away. That’s it. It’s that simple and it lasts for about three months. THREE MONTHS! Do you know how many dryer sheets I would use in three months? We currently have one dog and about six cats on the farm, we battle pet hair every day. One cat sneaks inside and sleeps on the first pile of clothes she can find, which is usually located in my daughter’s room. The Bounce Dryer Bar (which controls static) also helps repel hair. So, I’m no longer getting an electrical shock from my towels and the pet hair is left in the vent trap instead of on me and my clothes. I’m in love with this handy little thing. Talk about convenience. The Bounce Dryer Bar also has a replacement indicator. What? Yes. When the time comes you will see “REPLACE” on the surface of the bar. It easily snaps out-of-place and a new bar can be inserted into the same holder. I love that it tells me when it’s done. For more information about The Bounce Dryer Bar check out Bounce’s Facebook page.

Now for the fun. If you’d like a chance to try the Bounce Dyer Bar and win a $50 Visa gift card from Bounce and BlogHer, follow the rules listed below. I hope you all like this product as much as I do. Laundry is a part of my life almost daily, so anything that makes it more convenient is welcome at Coal Creek Farm.

To enter the contest, leave a comment or answer this question: How many people are you doing laundry for each week?
