We all need to remember that I’m six feet tall and this was my first pregnancy. I had a lot of room to store a baby. I bought maternity clothes, but I didn’t really need them. I wore some mighty ugly stretch pants to work and a polo shirt. I remember one of the customers that came into the place I worked discovering I was pregnant, he asked when the baby was due and I said, “Next week.” He looked at me shocked while he told me he had no idea I was pregnant, which I thought was pretty weird since he came in nearly every week. Basically, I just looked like I had gained a lot of weight and was a giant block. But, have no fear, my belly popped out just fine with all the other pregnancies and there was no doubt I was carrying a baby.

And here’s the first baby. She weighed 8 pounds 13 ounces, she was tiny compared to her brothers. I’d like to apologize to her right now for this photo. I always thought it looked like a Johnson’s baby powder commercial.

I was a high jumper and I really liked high jumping, but my problem was……I wasn’t very competitive and I’m still not. I was also the only high jumper on the team, so when I practiced, I was by myself and at the meets, I was by myself. Talk about your individual sport. So, when I jumped well enough to go to regionals I told my coach I wasn’t going. He didn’t put up much of a fight, probably because he had no idea that I was on the team until that moment.

I find myself doing little cheers here and there with my track kids. A couple weeks ago I was working with a very frustrated young man on his high jumping. He missed his height over and over and over until finally he made it and I did a little hurray! He glared at me as he headed out to jump again and grumbled, “I’d appreciate it if you wouldn’t treat me like a cheerleader.”

I would love to have a t-shirt that says, “Cheerleader Coach”. I’m just sayin’.

When you’re done laughing….

Clay got a lot of mileage out of that suit before it was stolen out of his car the day before our wedding. What? You’re not looking at the suit? Is that because you can’t take your eyes off the mound of frizz atop Clay’s head?

This was taken at Carmen’s wedding. She was my best friend in high school. That same weekend we announced, well, I announced to my parents that Clay and I were engaged. My dad’s response was, “Well, I expected that would happen.” and my mom said, “You’re not gonna have a pot to pee in.” Deep down I think they were really happy and just hoping that Clay would get a hair cut.
