This summer we halter trained three Dexter cows. It was a lot of work and a lot of fun. We learned that we suck at building fences and we learned how to catch cows, because we suck at building fences.
The heifer with the calf stayed with us for two months and the little heifer came for one month. They all went back to their ranch on July 1st. Then the heat wave came and we decided not to halter train any cattle in triple digit weather.
I learned so much from these cows, I miss them.
Ellen and I filmed a little bit one day when we had to go catch Libby. Libby is a two-year old heifer, her calf, Lintel, was just three days old when he came to our farm. Libby was a great cow and I let her out to graze around the farm sometimes because she never went far, but Lintel was just like a wild toddler and the second he got out he would take off running which meant Libby would run after him. We spent a lot of time catching cows. I didn’t spend a lot of time in the hair and make-up chair before going out to film the cow catching, so….it is what it is.

Y’all always seem to be having so much fun, even catching cows! I hope the video is after Libby and Lintel had been with you for awhile, seeing the baby is almost as big as the mama makes me worry if this was closer to the 3 days old, ouchie!
Melissa, the two black cows are heifers, the baby is laying in the corner. I don’t think you can see him, he’s a little brown bull.
Whew! For a minute I thought you meant you bought some serial killer cows. Glad to see they’re just escaped convicts.
You always, well almost always, make me smile!
AW! What a cute wittle cowie-wowie. I think my goat is taller than that cow. But not nearly as wide.
Dexters are so sweet. Help me understand the objective in having them for only 3 months? Are you thinking of getting into home cattle? Just wanted the experience? Socializing cattle for hire?
And, although it has nothing to do with anything…you’re looking good these days, April!
Tracy,
Thanks for you kind words, you’re sweet.
I have wanted to get a cow for a long time and this gave us the opportunity to see if we liked them. We were paid to halter train the heifers and the calf by the owners. We had them for two months total. The owner likes her cattle to have a good disposition and it makes them easier to load/unload into a chute and trailer. She also sells her cattle to people all over the country that are looking for milk cows, so we milked Libby for a little while. The little heifer, Fiona, has already been sold as a family milk cow.
Thanks for the explanation. So…what did you all decide about raising/owning cattle? Are you going to go for it full time? (Enquiring minds…!)
So…exactly what is the purpose of halter training cows? Why did you have them for such a short period of time?
I live in the suburbs and know NOTHING about taking care of livestock. Although I will say that I believe my dog is taller than those cows (he is a pretty big dog but those are pretty small cows). I will also admit that he is not well leash trained. Would you like to host him for a few months and take care of that for me?
Leslie,
We had a contract for one month to train the heifers. We ended up keeping Libby and Lintel for an extra month because we liked them and it was good for Fiona to have company while we trained her. It takes about a week for the cows to get used to us and another week for them to get the hang of being led around the farm and tied to a station. The last two weeks are just keeping them in a patterned routine and getting them to trust us as well as being calm with new situations like children running around and a barking dog, etc.
Yeah, the cows are stinkin’ cute, but Clay, as always, is hilarious! You are blessed!!
I know this post was about cows, and they are super cute, but what impressed me the most was you high tech gate lock…I have the exact same one at my house!
Time for some dehorning!
Cute video. What a fun chance to be around cows. Cows really can have personality and some really love the attention. I think that was a great opportunity…
