We all need to remember that I’m six feet tall and this was my first pregnancy. I had a lot of room to store a baby. I bought maternity clothes, but I didn’t really need them. I wore some mighty ugly stretch pants to work and a polo shirt. I remember one of the customers that came into the place I worked discovering I was pregnant, he asked when the baby was due and I said, “Next week.” He looked at me shocked while he told me he had no idea I was pregnant, which I thought was pretty weird since he came in nearly every week. Basically, I just looked like I had gained a lot of weight and was a giant block. But, have no fear, my belly popped out just fine with all the other pregnancies and there was no doubt I was carrying a baby.
And here’s the first baby. She weighed 8 pounds 13 ounces, she was tiny compared to her brothers. I’d like to apologize to her right now for this photo. I always thought it looked like a Johnson’s baby powder commercial.

That photo’s adorable – I’m totally on board.
baby’s in buckets go way back. Maybe that’s where that weird saying about throwing baby out w/ the bathwater comes from?
Cute baby! The hair reminds me of Lyle Lovett’s. Did Clay ever get that a lot back then?
Isn’t it amazing the pictures we will pose our first child for and spend substantial amounts of money on and then wonder what we were thinking years later!
Ahhh, the cute bath bucket pic! What’s even more amazing, is that we have so many of those adorable pictures of our first baby….less of the second….and far fewer of the third….. hmmmmmmmm.
I think it’s a cute picture. And not nearly as embarrassing as that baby fairy stuff PW did to her daughters!
I got the same comments. I’m tall as well and people would come into the dentist office and think I was just gaining weight. When I hit 8 months there wasn’t much doubt. My daughter weighed 8lb. 12oz. and was my smallest also. How much did those boys weigh? Ellen was/is a cutie.
How tall is Clay?!!!!! I look for people like you in the grocery store to get things off those top shelves. Oh, wait, I only have to look for someone 5’4″ or taller!!! When I was pregnant everyone knew it at 3 months – no room to go but out front!
I didn’t show until the last 3 months of my first pregnancy. Back then I had stomach muscles! I showed faster with my second baby but looked pretty good at the end because I only gained half of what I did the first time.
Yeah, when I was pregnant, folks told me I looked like a string with a knot tied in it! Ellen was such a cutie! My 16 yr old son has some of those same pics, including one with him in a sailor suit. These will make an appearance in a slide show on his wedding day!
Was Clay channeling Kramer?
I’m still insanely jealous. I’m 5’9″ and looked pregnant from month 3.5 on. And he was “only” 8 lb., 6 oz.! To be fair, I have a retroverted uterus which MAKES me carry out front whether I like it or not. But still… jealous! And love the bucket photo!
I have those same “naked baby in a bucket” pics of my kids!
Has Clay ever thought about playing Cosmo Kramer in an off broadway production of the Seinfield show.
April, CLAY looks more pregnant than you do in this photo! Just sayin’.
Please please tell us how much the others weighed, you should post a pregnant pic & baby pic of each of them in separate posts.

What people don’t realize is that internal babies move internal organs aside to fit in there. It may look better to not show, but as one who carried all her babies the same way, there were definitely repurcussions to that. The heart gets shoved aside, the lungs get squished, the ribs have toes between them, the heartburn…ooo, the heartburn. I think I stopped after three because of the heartburn.
