My daughter, Ellen, is in the school musical “Into the Woods”. She has the part of Rapunzel. That’s her with the long blond wig. And the part of her mother, the witch, is being played by the choir teacher Mr. L. He had to jump in and take the part at the last minute because the sweet girl that originally was playing the witch got the flu and as much as I’m sad that she didn’t get to play her part, because she has an awesome voice……Mr. L made the perfect old witch. He had that wig draped in front of his face the entire night. That would have driven me INSANE! Just sayin’, can’t stand the hair in my face.
Anyway, one more thing about Ellen. She stood up in a tower and had to do this little singing bit not unlike Ariel in The Little Mermaid, ‘Ahhhh, Ahhhh, Ahhhhh’ if you know what I mean. Ellen told me since she’s not one of the choir kids that they were going to have someone else do the singing part and she would just lip it. So this beautiful voice kept singing every time she came into the tower to let her hair down and the entire night I thought one of the girls was singing for her. I found out as we were going to the car that it was her singing….I had no idea she could sing that well. I’m still in shock, I didn’t recognize her voice at all. Great mom moment.
So, let’s recap…my kids go to a really small school, so small that there are no back-ups for the leads in the musical, so the teacher takes over and pretty much steals the show and I just discovered that my daughter has a lovely voice. Strange, but quite normal, that should be my new motto.

You’re so funny. That might be a small school but apparently they’ve got enough funds to buy some hair. That hair would drive me bonkers.
Love it! That is some funky hair!
My son had the lead in the Christmas play last year and I think I held my breath the whole play. Is that a Mom thing? I was so proud too. It’s amazing what they can do as they grow up. He didn’t have a cool wig though.
Surprises are wonderful! The fact that the teacher had to step in to be the witch just makes me laugh.
ahh… goose bump moment. how sweet. isn’t it great when you discover something new (the GOOD kind of new) about your kiddos?
What a nice surprise.
I think the small school is a blessing. If we were in your town I’d likely put my kids in PS, and not home school them, just because of it’s small-ness.
What in the world did you do to that photo? It looks like a painting and not a photo at all. Or is it my 40+ yo eyes? Seriously!
Theater experiences are so good for kids. They remember them forever. My dd is currently playing Marcy in “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown.” and just got into Les Miseables for next fall.
my elementary school had 29 people:) High school was huge with 250! And yet my favorite place that I have lived and worked is New York City.
I smiled when I saw the track team. I was the champion long jumper in our quarter of the country, though our school had no long jump pit. I also had to borrow sneakers (no one had spikes to lend) etc. etc.Our Oklahoma lead was a girl playing a guy because we didn’t have enough guys etc.
Small town living equals problem-solving skills.
What a great evening – okay, so maybe Ellen won’t dance on home videos but so what – she can SING and ACT! Cool.

I need to see Ellen’s face.
She can sing, too. Wow.
What? No vid? We want to see (and hear), too!
Your daughter sounds really talented and so poised to be able to sing for the play. What a lovely surprise!
Into the Woods is a great play! Did they shorten it for school? It is crazy long.
Into the Woods we go again! We have to every now and then…
how I love that musical.
so funny.
so clever.
so hard for a little school.
Mr. L. rocks.
The Princes are hilarious in that play. Agony!!!
How cool that Ellen played Rapunzel.
Congrats Ellen!!!
Have you seen the Bernadette Peters dvd of Into the Woods? You must!
I wish.
So umm…the back of Ellen’s long blond head looks terrific! I wonder if that’s a Hannah Montana wig?
But how cool is it that she has an awesome singing voice!! You must do some video of her singing now, mom.
I was in that show – and Rapunzel’s singing part is really hard / high – that’s impressive!
i was the granny! hehe
