Ma and Pa take the kids to a deli on The Hill.

Do we look a bit confused?

We visited a deli on The Hill in St. Louis called um…uh…er…I think it was Goilia or Giaoila or Gorilla or Gollia or Gollum.  Okay, it was an Italian Deli and I can’t for the life of me remember the name.  All I know is that they serve homemade salami sandwiches and they gave us a free sample to try.  It was so good.  They also had us try the Provel cheese, which is used on Imo’s pizza.  The first time I ate an Imo’s pizza I wanted to spit it out in the trash.  What was that awful sweet cheese?!   I grew to like it along with a few other St. Louis foods like pork steak and fried ravioli.  But, Gooey Buttercake…NO.  That stuff is just butter and sugar gone wrong.  I never understood the appeal for a sunken yellow cake heavily dusted with powdered sugar.  It’s wrong people…WRONG!

All that to say after the deli let us try that awesome salami I ordered tuna salad.  I know!  I just needed some tuna.  And my friends, I was not disappointed.

  • I love the candid shot. And, I gotta say. Dang, April, I think you lost all of that imaginary weight you were talking about putting on!

  • I spy an extra kid or two.

  • I thought I was the only one who didn’t like Gooey Butter Cake! Disgusting!

… Who took the photo ?? ;-) ) All of you are on it !!

  • jamoody

I love love love me some Imo’s! I always order way more pizza than I need cause it is so awesome cold!

  • Who took the picture? Salami – I don’t think so. Us southern people don’t quite get that. Your cake thing sounded good though.

  • Melanie

Oh come on sister! Gooey Butter Cake is AMAZING and it’s spelled “Gioia’s” and I still can’t believe you picked tuna over the Italian Trio and those extra kids look drugged and so does Clay for that matter and S. might need a tan because it looks like he’s wearing tights.

  • This is truly a classic picture!

  • Maureen in IL (near St Louis)

You did go to the Hill! Good choice. But no to the gooey? Sister, I’m worried about you.
Still upset there was no meet up in STL. Hope you enjoyed some of the good weather we had.

  • Ah, poor Clay, the poster boy for “Dazed and Confused.” Or is one of those people who take a very LONG time to wake up in the morning? LOL. Nice to see all the family in one shot.

  • My First Wife served up some really good tuna cakes for dinner last night. You might stop by the next time you get a craving… On the side? Lots of veggies, fresh from Price Chopper.

    Who get’s the photo credit?

I never developed a taste for Imo’s pizza. Blech. Toasted ravs, on the other hand, were like little bites of heaven to me! And although they’re pork steaks, I sincerely thought that they were called park steaks for at least the first two years we lived there. Another St. Louis food memory for me it Baked Mostaccioli. Someone always brought it to potluck lunches at work. But everyone called it “mustaccioli.” Again, I had no idea there was another name for it. Our favorite Italian Deli on the Hill was Ameghetti’s. Mmm… You’re really making me miss St. Louis. We’re Southerners now, and I love the Southern fare, but there’s a lot of food I miss from St. Louis!

You remind me of a bunch of farmers in NYC for the first time! Frankly, my dear, I think Ellen is the only one who looks calm, cool and collected, and sure of herself!!! Heh heh….

  • please pass along all of your personal recommendations so we can experience st. louis as the locals do….we’ll be there in two weeks for spring break!
    take care!

I’m laughing at all the comments. I am a St Louis native, that has gradually moved a bit further NW with each move. Gooey Butter Cake, Ted Drews, Toasted Ravioli, and Mostaccioli. Are all favorites of mine, but I could do without the pork steaks. I can see why no one in any other part of the country feels the need to make them, they are gross! Looks like you are having a great trip!

  • Helen

Hey, fill me in on where to go, what to eat, what to do for all of St. Louis. My brother lives there and I need to pay him a visit. Never been there so am I in for a treat?

Love your family, by the way!

  • JJ

We are also heading to St. Louis for spring break – any tips?

I know that’s not Ellen. Is she a cousin. She fits right in. This lineup situation is where our gang usually loses its cool and it turns into,
what does he want?, what does different he want?, no you can’t change your mind, you’re getting what I ordered, I’m not asking the guy to change another thing,no, you cannot have Mountain dew, ever, even if you ask me 100 times, no, you’re not changing again, find seats, find seats, sit… what am I getting? Me? I haven’t even looked! Arghhh out of time, nuts, a tuna sandwich, that’ll do. Whatever, whatever, WHATEVER, I’m sitting down……..

I’m with Andi, you look soooo skinny!

I think certain people wait for large families to show up and just throw their kids in line to order their food, hoping that the mother or father don’t figure out how many of the children are actually NOT theirs!!! I swear I paid for a random child to get into the movies once! :)

  • Oh my Gosh !! Look at your husbands face ! Is he ever cute !

How many kids do you guys have anyway ??? !!

  • Nice rundown on the eats in St. Louis. Should I ever happen to travel there during daylight hours without the busload of teenage girls.

  • April, you did the right thing by returning to KS. Anyone who cannot LOVE gooey-butter cake, doesn’t deserve to live in the awesomeness that is St. Louis. So there.

  • Jenny

Was it Amaghettis? Very famous deli on the hill. People around St. Louis know what you mean when you say an Amaghetti’s sandwich. Also Vianano’s italian grocery store on Shaw Avenue is a place we try to work in on every visit! We usually leave with a box full of sauces, unusual pasta, wine and cheese! Hope you had a great trip!
