I was looking at a cocktail shaker in Wally World tonight. I know. Why does Wally World have a cocktail shaker?
Here in Kansas the only alcohol you can buy in a grocery store is beer. All other alcoholic beverages have to be purchased at a liquor store, except on Sundays, then the liquor stores are closed.
If you move away from Kansas and forget all these laws and New Year’s Eve is on a Sunday, you are screwed. I know this.
Anyway, I was looking at a cocktail shaker thinking it was a strange item for Wally World to be selling and I turned to my daughter and jokingly said,
“Ellen, I think it’s time you tried a cocktail.”
And then she said…are you ready?
This is my 16 year old daughter mind you. The same child that has tagged along to many, many parties with us where beverages of all sorts are being served and she says to me,
“Why? They’re just water with an olive in it.”
Have I told you lately how much I love my sweet naive girl?
Water with an olive in it….priceless.

Wow, I like that kid. She’s even more naive than I was at 16 but still totally fun. I can tell she must be fun because she makes all the same faces her mom and dad make and they are some fun and funny people. I, on the other hand, was just naive and nerdy. I hope you have that first pic framed. It’s even more priceless than water with an olive in it.
Too cute. :0)
My dad grew up in St. Joseph, MO and said they used to drive across the state line for beer since the age of purchase was 18 and Missouri was 21.
great… I’m never going to hear the end of this one.
I’m sorry Ellen, you can get together with my daughters and mourn the fact that your life is not your own….!
Now I’ve got a hankering for some water with an olive in it – shoot fire and it’s Sunday.
and here i thought she was going to confess that she’d already had one!
she’s absolutely beautiful! She’s got pretty sparkly eyes!
I soooo resemble that remark! I was similarly naive in my youth, and I turned out OK… I think!
I love how much that girl acts like you in those pictures.
Priceless! She is beautiful.
As I sit here sipping Pisco Cream, a liqueur that my son brought me from Peru, may I just say-
Ellen looks so much like you, especially her smile.
It’s great that she’s confident in her beauty and goes without makeup!
I have a beautiful sixteen year old girl too, btw.
Your daughter is a beautiful combo of Clay and and you.
Happy 16th to a sweet girl!
Well if it’s not water with an olive what is it? Could this be why my parties are not well attended?
Aw, but what a blessing if all 16 year old’s were naive like your precious girl.
Ellen, you are a beautiful young lady and such a compliment to your parents!
I love it! I was the same way as a teen. I only hope my kids inherit this. I also have to laugh at the fact that a couple of years ago I bought a plastic, Hawaiian-like cocktail shaker at Wally World and still haven’t used it. It just looked so fun! I am a beer/wine kinda gal, I guess.
p.s. Ellen, you are beautiful and seem very funny too and are surviving driving lessons(?) Maybe mom should let you post your side of driving lessons
And Champagne is ginger-ale!
Cheers, Ellen. Have a happy birthday!
She’s the kind of girl everyone wants to be with…even old mom’s in Wisconsin.
Happy Birthday Ellen!
You are beautiful inside and out.
What is Wally World?
Part of me says ‘naive’, the other part says ‘why didn’t I think of that when I was 16 and wanted to divert attention from my utterly vast knowledge of liquor’.
Hmmmm… ah, she’s sweet either way.
Ellen, you are awesome!
I order Shirley Temples in a fancy glass when I go out (and I’m well over 21) and people think it’s a cocktail… then I can still be the designated driver, and no one bothers me to order a drink. LOL. So even adults are not sure what actual cocktails are at times… no worries.
She’s beautiful!
Ellen, you are a gem! Your parents have done a great job if you can say something that sweet and innocent at 16. April-What is Wally World?
Wal-M.a.r.t….I try not to give them anymore advertising than they already have.
She’s very, very pretty. Sounds like you’ve been blessed with a wonderful daughter.

Liquor stores are allowed to be open on Sundays in Kansas. The new law passed in 2005 but some counties choose not to allow Sunday sales still. Douglas County does allow it.
One of the benefits of homeschooling our children…naivete. It’s a beautiful thing in this world that pushes our kids to grow up too fast.
You let her think that as long as you can.
you are the whitest people i have ever seen!! seriously!
PERFECT!! You are clearly doing your job correctly!
