This gym thing I’m doing? It’s a true lesson in humility. Today I got to my class late and it was crowded. I tried to make myself small in the back, but when I can see my face in the mirror towering over the rest of the class…that means the teacher can see me too.
I accidentally smacked two people. One with my hand, the other with my foot.
I didn’t catch on that it was me the teacher was talking to until she said, “Other foot…” for the third time.
My muscles are very sore right now.
I’m just going to keep smiling and apologizing my way through it.

I give you so much credit for doing it. Maybe kickboxing class next?
I always felt there was just too much pressure to get all the steps “exactly right” in an organized class. Can’t we just muddle through and move our bodies until we get the hang of it? I imagine myself to be more of the Phoebe school of exercise–you know, from Friends? Where she just runs for the joy of it? That would make classes a lot more fun.
Good for you! I’m going for the bicep curls right now…That involves shoveling food into my mouth. Not sure how it will work out for my hips, but my arms should look great in no time!
That’s why I NEVER sign up for a class. I just go and run and it doesn’t matter when I kick myself in the ankle.
I just bought a weighted hula hoop-and it hurts!
I hate watching myself workout in the mirror.
It’s always so disappointing in so many ways.
Way to go! And no worries on hitting/kicking people…that’s the risk a person takes when taking a group fitness class.
I attended Jazzercise for a while…forget that! I get turned around just doing simple stuff! I know right from left until I have to follow directions in aerobics!
I used to teach step aerobic classes and have seen many beginers. Don’t stress, just have fun. It will all become second nature, and the directions will process faster and faster with every class.
Being a person who cannot tell a joke in front of 10 people I don’t know how I got into teaching, but I did and I had fun with it. Trust me that we up there get nervous and flustered and make a lot of mistakes too.
Everyone and I mean everyone in that class has been in your postition, just starting out, so generally speaking they should be pretty understanding.
Have a Blast!! It’s such a great stress reliever.
At least you didn’t step on toes and elbow someone in the gut. So it could have been worse.
Good job. Keep it up.
Not to worry – eventually whoever you smacked will probably return the favor. Good for you, April. I’m proud!!
Hello again! I am trying to follow you however I keep getting widgets or gidgets or something. Am I doing something crazy? Is there a secret to following. Help!
Hi Marla,
As far as I know you click the subscribe button there on the left and choose what you want to use…gotta be honest, I don’t use any of them because I can’t get it all figured out myself.
Hi Marla, I think April means on the right. Anyway, I see you have a blogger.com template. If you want to “Follow” April’s blog try this, I do it all the time when I want to Follow a blog that is not a blogger.com blog. Copy her address at the top of your screen in the address bar. Go to your blog’s Dashboard. Scroll down the page until you see on the left: Reading List.
Click on: Blogs I’m Following.
Scroll down to: the button “ADD”
Click on it and paste her address into the URL form that pops up.
Click on the “NEXT” button.
Now, you might have the problem I have: the forms float to the top, so… I tap on F11 button to enlarge my screen. If I do that, it is no problem.
So, this is the way to Follow blogs that are not Blogger.com blogs. I follow about 165 and growing! Right – I don’t get much else done, I’m addicted. Good luck. Let me know if you have any questions.
Thank you Barbee…yes, right, right, I meant right. Or did I?
Barbee ~ You are AWESOME! Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!!
April ~ No worries. Once they removed my uterus, I lost all sense of direction too.
This made me chuckle and I needed that today:)
I used to be a workout fanatic, but then I got sick and had to take time off. I am just now getting back to it and hearing about your experiences with the gym is totally inspiring me. You can do it!! Sore muscles are a good sign- it means that you are doing something and getting your muscles toned. The best thing about exercise is that after awhile your body becomes addicted to it making it much easier for it to become apart of your routine. Keep with it. And try to find something that you enjoy doing- it makes it all the easier to show up to the gym.
You have any advice on staying motivated during this cold winter? Sometimes it is so hard to get out of bed or out of the warmth to go workout.
My pilates teacher always tells me to trust the process even if you aren’t getting everything exactly right. And that it is the quality of movement or exercise that matters more than the quantity. As long as you keep moving forward then the action itself is progress.
Remember: Forward is your Salvation!
That’s etched in my mind w/horseback riding/jumping.
Do not abandon your goal in the middle, it can be disastrous. For real.
Commit and Go For It!
That being said, smiling can get you out of a many a sticky situation.
My husband and I started a kickboxing circuit training thing a few weeks back. Jumping rope is the 1st station and since after having children I can longer jump rope the trainer made me do squats. Squats are also the 2nd station.
The result from doing too many squats is that you can’t squat and if you manage to squat, you can’t unsquat. I almost got stranded in a public bathroom but was able to pull myself up with the toilet paper holder.
No pain, no gain. Right?
Yeah, whatever.
Good for you! Keep it up. I have tried taking classes, but I just never feel comfortable (even in the back). For the last six months I’ve been walking 5-6 days a week, for about 45 minutes. I like the solitude so much (esp. since that’s the only time I get any!).
