These is mah boots, uh-huh, they is.
I bought them several years ago when I decided to embrace my country roots. They started out as a fashion statement, but I was smart enough to go for comfort over style. I really wanted some pointy boots, but they hurt my foot, so I went we these things and haven’t looked back. I have no idea what brand they are. I bought them at Vanderbilt’s in Wamego, Kansas. Now I wear them for utility purposes like walking in the mud and crud that comes with raising farm animals. And that’s the end of my boot story.
Or is it?
Yeah, that’s about all I have to say about those boots.
Let’s talk about the jeans. They’re Gap Long & Lean, they are the only jeans I could find in any store that were long enough and didn’t have such a high waist that my ribs were resting on the belt loops. That particular pair dates back to 2002…I’m not kidding. Yes, I remember when I bought them, they were the first pair of jeans I bought after I had lost enough baby lard to fit into something besides sweat pants. What’s the oldest piece of clothing you still wear out in public? Just wondering, no exaggerating, cause we all know I never exaggerate on this here blog.
ps. Clay was very touched by all the birthday wishes yesterday.
pps. I know I promised a picture of him, it’s still coming….I have to word it to his satisfaction before I can post it…that’s how bad it is.

Love those boots! I have yet to succumb to the boot temptation even though I live in Texas – the cowboy capital of the world!
Happy belated birthday to Clay – the super pig hauler!
Wow….that is a long time to still be able to wear a pair of jeans! Mine are usually worn out within 2 years. They seem to wear out in the places I have buldges, if you know what I mean:)
I’ve got a pair of Birkenstock Arizona sandals from the 80′s that I still wear. I wear them as house shoes but they’re so comfortable they go out with me wherever I go.
I have the same Gap Long and Lean jeans but they are in the back of my closet. Someday I’ll wear them again.
I have a Columbia jacket that I still wear.
I remember wondering if I could zip it up when I was pregnant with Katie.
I remember buying it at jcpenny.
I’m really classy.
It is at least 15 years old.
It does not look that old.
The zipper is broken tho.
Oh dear. Not that jcpenny has anything to do with something being classy or not….
it’s just me and my old taupe windbreaker coat that lack a bit of class.
Oh the Gap Long & Lean! How I love them so. I’m only 5′ and yet the Long & Lean’s are the only jeans that have ever fit like a glove. I’m still wearing my pair from 5 years ago. They’re starting to rip in the knee, but I refuse to let them die! Most of the clothes I own and wear are from 7-9 years ago (when I used to have money) and once I lose a few more pounds, I’ll be wearing stuff from 14 years ago. ;D
I still have t-shirts that I had in high school(so at least 11 years ago). My brown corduroy jacket has been with me since fall of 1998. I’m sure there are other things that are lurking in my closet from back in the day, but I probably can’t wear them any more. They are waiting on me to stop stuffing my face all the time and finally lose all my weight from baby #3. They might be waiting a while, though….
Much to my families disgust, I still wear an old college sweatshirt from the University of Pittsburgh (and I graduated in 1992 think I bought freshman year 1988). I’ve worn a hole in the cuffs so I can slide my thumbs into and use the cuffs to keep the palms of my hands warm when I hold onto the steering wheel in the winters. The college emblem is wearing around the edges on the front and requires a tee-shirt underneath or else there is some flashing!! But it is so soft and comfortable.
Do you remember when Levi’s first came out with jeans for women? I bought a pair in 1981, right after the birth of my second daughter. I still have and wear them!!! They are soft and worn for their years, just like me. In the winter I have to wear leotards under them to shelter me from the thin spots. They are my favorite. They just don’t make ‘em like that anymore, do they? My girls have threatened to throw them away more than just a time or two. When it is time for me to go, the jeans are coming with me.

Love the boots! As a suburbanite turned farmer…yikes still living in the rural suburbs though with cows!!!! , I’ve gotta get me some of them boots! A hat like Clay’s too! But hat’s make my head itch so I hesitate. I’ve still got an Eddie Bauer barn jacket that I bought at the thrift store……15-20 yrs ago and it’s just now going thread bare at the wrists. But I love that thing….coulda bought a new one at Lands End last winter for $20 but I couldn’t break down and part with my oldie but goodie! It is getting a little small around the bottom though….musta shrunk!
I have a lot of stuff that is over 10 years old that I still wear! I tend to buy things I really really like….then wear them until they are rags! And way out of style!!
I have a 20yr old turtleneck, that has held up all these years…and a 20yr old cardigan. The turtleneck has obviously not gone out of style, but the cardigan has…..
Ok, I’m a fellow tall chick (6’1″) and finding pants that fit my 38″ inseam is SO difficult. Here’s where I have found pants that fit, and I live in California so I’m not sure if you have ANY of these stores around you.
-PacSun carries long pants in several styles, and even has been having them on sale (2 for $55 is AWESOME).
-New York and Company sells fancy pants (like slacks) in long sizes.
-Buckle carres EXTRA long jeans, that are expensive (think $80), but they are trendy (if you care)
-Boot Barn carries a brand called Cruel Girl (around $40)that has a line of long jeans that are very long, and very durable. Though not as trendy.
And a piece of clothing I’ve worn forever? probably sweatshirts that are thin, but still SO comfy for around the house that I just can’t get rid of them.
Great boots. The oldest thing I still wear are pants I’ve had for 13 years. And they’re mens pants. I finally stopped wearing them out of the house this year when my husband begged.
Impressive. That the jeans have lasted seven years and that you are still the same size after seven years. A’course you’re a youngster. Having two babies at 40 forever changed my ability to wear old jeans.
I have two pairs of boot similar to yours.
My guess they are ariats.
Very comfortable!
Love your site!
I read it (and laugh) every day.

I just tossed a pair of PJ bottoms from 1991 because the exposed elastic was grabbing skin – ouch!
And I just wore my mom’s “cocktail” jacket to a shindig at the British Embassy in DC (sum total of my posh experiences the past 45 years) that she bought in the late 70′s. It is very well made and I used to wear it all the time when I worked. Outside the home. When I didn’t clean toilets and vacuum cheese from behind the couch.
I have three blazers (do people still say that word) that I’ve had since 1993 and I wear them all fall and winter. They were actually my Granny’s and my Mom kept them after Granny died when I was in high school. They date from the early 80′s but are so classically cut that you can’t tell! I so love them and they’ve been with me through high school, college, careers, mommyhood…I’ve loved them longer than I’ve loved my hubs!!!!!!
I understand boots and jeans, live in ‘em! Favorite jeans are lucky brand from early 90′s with some perfect holes. Boots from 1978!!! WOW, makes me old, doesn’t it! http://www.whatupduck.com
My oldest article of clothing I still wear in public is my grandma’s darling wool coat. This little swing coat is an amazing caramel color, with a Peter Pan collar and huge buttons embellished with rhinestones. The sleeves are definitely short on me, but I absolutely love this coat & its tie to my grandma so I wear it anyway. I usually wear it on our annual Christmas outing to Kansas City and I wore it on the train trip I took with my daughters to Chicago. It’s a keeper – and looks so vintage in pictures.
Until recently I had a sweater/cardigan that I wore regularly. It belonged to my dad when he was in high school in the late 60s. I loved that thing and I miss it terribly.
I have a tan moleskin shirt/jacket that I wear every winter. I bought it at Sears in January 1998, one month after my first child was born.
I like Gap Long and Lean, I go through jeans too fast though to have any that last that long. Mine usually die after about 3 years.
P~
Let’s see…I have an old Penn State sweatshirt that I got in middle school, so around 1992, I think. The cuffs are barely hanging on, but I still love it! It’s a wear around the house only kind of thing…unless I’m pregnant (which I’m not right now).
The oldest Piece of clothing I still wear out in public? I have a jacket I got in 2000 that I still wear and another one I got in 2002 that I still wear. There is a pair of sneakers I bought in 2000 and since they’re still in good shape, I continue to wear them. I have sweaters and t-shirts which are older than both of my girls (9 and 11) and I still wear those. What can I say, I hate to go shopping…
Well, I’ve lost 235 pounds, so nope – not a whole lot of old clothing hanging around here that I still wear! LOL!
Congratulations!
Sigh. Love the 2002 Long & Lean. They just don’t make them like they used to! Still have a couple of pairs in a drawer somewhere, but that was 2 sizes ago, and by the time I get back to that size, I probably won’t be that shape. Time to say goodbye to my 30s I guess
Old stuff? I have a couple of shirts that date back to the L&L era, and a fleece pullover that I wear around the house and camping. I stole it from hubby, and he was wearing it when our son was born in 2003 (its in the photos, where hubby is clearly gesturing “no thanks, I don’t need to cut the cord!”) so I partly keep it for sentimental reasons.
Whoo, Dina weigh-to-go!!
I have a pair of cowboy boot I bought in Fort Worth in ’93 that are Black & White w/ Turquoise and red on the top. They are magnificently ugly and comfortable. They look like black boots until I move my jeans and then the flash of white, turquoise and red GRABs your attention. Lots of looks, but not many appreciative comments.
I had Dingos, pointy toes and too small. They were just for style obviously.
I have an old sweater from my high school years. Yes, I do. It’s over 30 years old now and I still get compliments everytime I wear it!
I was just thinking about a few of the things I have hanging around in my closet. I’ve got a black, cropped fringe leather jacket that looks very 1989, which is exactly the year I bought it. I don’t wear it in public and haven’t for a very looooong time because, uh, CROPPED and also FOUR children. I have a long green leather skirt and off white silk blouse, both with fringe, that I’ve had for 15 years. I haven’t worn that outfit in at least 6 years and was wondering if I would ever wear it again. I was also wondering, “What the heck is it with all this fringe?!?” and “Do people even wear fringe any more?” Thoughts to ponder. I have tons of similarly old stuff, April. I will have to get back to you on whether there is anything I actually still wear out in public.
I had a pair of GORGEOUS Cowboy boots that were actually shoes that I got at a high end clothing store close to home. I loved them like crazy. Easy to slip on and off. Lots of compliments. I mourned when they wore out
I have a pair of clogs that I bought in Europe in 2001. They are the real old fashioned kind with wooden soles and leather tops. They are the most comfortable pair of shoes I have ever had. I wear them all the time and they are still in great shape.
I have a pair of keens I just wore yesterday that are about 6 yrs. old – great shoes.
I have a couple of jackets that belonged to suits my mom wore in her 20′s (in the mid-1950′s) and I’ve been wearing them since the early 1970′s off & on. They’re so well-constructed and classic styles, they still look good.
That’s some impressive first-position turnout in your second shot, even tougher in boots than ballet shoes!
Wow, some of these people have some OLD duds. Me, I’m just not into my clothes on a personal level that much, except for a skirt my sister bought for me years ago in Dallas (part of the charm…home). Kind of a peasanty-type black skirt with muted purple flowers on it (my favorite color!). Anyway, I’ve had that skirt close to 10 years, and I still wear it in the fall and winter to church. I just can’t part with it, even though it’s starting to look a little sad and no longer holds its shape.
Happy Birthday Clay!
In our family, we like to drag it out for at least a week. Celebration with family then another time celebrations with friends, a lunch date, etc, etc.
Have a great birthday WEEK!
PS. Love the boots, they remind me of mine except yours are more stylish!
The piece of clothing, the french terry tee that I wore the night before my first child was born and she just turned 12. I have it documented in a photo!!!!!
OH, a muted green “swing / cape” jacket I got on honeymoon eh, well, 14 years ago.
I have a pair of tie die short pants that date back to 1985. I love them. They are getting threadbare though(go figure:). . I will soon lay them to rest. They are very Agassi-esque
I have a sweater vest that I bought at Wal-Mart (blech) about 17 years ago that I LOVE. My friends and my husband hate it and one friend in particular thinks it mandates a sacrimonial burning but I still won’t give it up. There are LOADS of pictures of me in it at birthdays, holidays, office things, etc. Whatever happened to the saying, “a classic never dies”? Well, I guess anything at Wal-Mart is automatically disqualified as a “classic” though.
Way to go, Dina! Who needs old stuff? You’ve probably been having fun creating a whole new wardrobe! ;D
You are such a tease!!!!! Anxiously awaiting the photo of Clay!
I have a pair of Timberland boots that I bought when my daughter was seven; she’s now 26. They didn’t get much wear for the first ten years of so, but when we moved to a cold climate, I wore them almost every single day duringthe winter months (except when the freaking snow was so deep it would go over the tops).
Let’s see. My hiking shoes we originally purchased for my last year at girl scout camp, so that was about 10 years ago. They look like new. I don’t hike so much. I have a winter coat in my closet that I got in jr high, so that’s at least 11 years. I can’t wear it anymore though because the padding’s all mashed from use, and it’s not warm. Mom sewed up all the holes.
I’ve got some really old hair accessories, though.
Love your post. Hope hiking shoes could guide someone there.
