Sometimes our chickens lay what we like to call Super Eggs.
They usually have a double yolk. One time I found one with a triple yolk.
Can you guess which one of these eggs is the Super Egg?
Here, let me label it for you. Did you guess correctly?

Sometimes I buy the jumbo eggs in the market, just so maybe maybe maybe there will be a double yolk one for my son. I wish I had chickens, but they scare me.
OMG that is a big egg. My dad used to raise chickens and every once in awhile we would find one like this. Us kids thought it was so cool… Enjoy eating it…I’ve had one that was a double yoke but not triple.
I think that would make a lovely banner for your site. But no wonder you have to push the insides of your chickens back in…. laying things like that! What are you feeding your hens? Really, I’d like to know what you feed your layers.
We let our layers free range during the day and I feed them a mixture of corn, soybean and mineral (‘the same stuff I feed the pigs).
Amazing, but yes.. I did get the super egg right! Wonder how, says she scratching her head…
Can we hear it for the hen? OUCH!
I want chickens so bad. I live in an old neighborhood that is zoned “rural”, so I could get away with it. That egg is awesome!
MMMMM….omelet! A+ for the hen
I want chickens, too. I could have 4 in my city. Not sure my neighbors would dig it, though. I had chickens when I was a kid, and they scared me, but I *think* I’m over that now.
Beautiful eggs! We have one hen who lays a super size every other day. We don’t know which one though! Bless her heart.
Wow, I am not sure I have ever seen an egg that big that has come out of a chicken. Can you even shut the carton? Please update us when you crack it open as to how many yolks it has/had.
I also love all the varied colors of eggs so pretty.
I like your big ass egg. But what about those greenish colored ones? Brown chickens lay brown eggs, white chickens lay white eggs, what layed those two tinted eggs? I’m not getting chickens although I have often thought it would be great to have them. I’m living vicariously through the chicken doctor.
Holy Smokes! Poor Chicken…
I like how your chicken was able to label it so neatly for you. You have some talented chickens. Gonna’ send one over to PW?
Holy cow. I keep thinking how did the chicken who laid that, fair?
Oh, that brings back memories! When our girls were young, we’d have 3-4 dozen eggs daily that were that size. I’d look at eggs in the store and they seemed so small. The girls are over 4 now, the flock is whittled down to 14 from the original 40, and we get maybe 2 eggs per day — normal sized eggs.
What are you doing for cartons? I had trained my work people to bring me theirs, and we still have quite a few if you need more.
How do you get your chickens back in the coop for night?
Oh, that poor widdle chicken mama.
I always feel so sorry for whatever chicken had to pop the big egg out. We get them occassionally too and just say – OUCH!!
I had two pet chickens as a little girl in the 50′s. They lived on my grandpa’s place. Sometimes he’d bring one to visit me. Imagine him catching one, putting it his old car and driving it down to my folks house! One was Connie and one was Rosy Color. Everytime he found a large egg/double yoke in the hen house he’d tell me one of MY chicken’s laid it. I believed him. He passed away when I was 13. It never occurred to me that chicken story was a little um..well not true till I was in my 20′s. Ha..still makes me laugh! Thanks for sharing your beautiful eggs..and hey that big one is mind!
Ouch! I’de like to see the layee behind this egg!
OMG…I bet that hurt Ms Chicken (or is it Mrs?)
Just what I need. Another blog to read. You are leading my life. Well, my dream life. I’m going to have to start peeking through your windows. I think it’s going to be fun.
Poor chicken! No wonder you have to “doctor” them! It looks like good eating though! Wow!
I’ve been purchasing jumbo free range eggs from a grocer near my parents’ house. The eggs are huge but I don’t think I’ve seen any quite THAT big. That poor, poor chicken!
Found your blog through Pioneer Woman and LOVE IT! I’ve got some explorin’ to do here.
April,
Just wondering if your blue/green tinted eggs are from a Ameraucana… also, what breed lays the brown speckled eggs? I live in St. Louis (county) Missouri and just got 3 chickens in late March. Hopefully my neighbors and the city don’t mind! I can’t wait for them to start laying – hopefully my husband and I have their coop fininshed before that happens though – I need to get them out of my dining room!!
That hadta hurt :O
Oh. Two yolks. Three Yolks. I have never heard of such a thing. I would like that.
That would be the highlight of my day.
I like your super egg.
You said, ‘ass’.
I’m telling.
Dang. I always guess wrong. Good thing you gave us the answer.
Wow that is a super egg alright. I feel for that poor chicken, that exactly how I felt when I had twins, eek!
Wow. How does one give birth to an egg that large? Yikes.
My kids love it when we get a “big a**” egg from our ladies. They always fight over who gets to eat the “double egg” as they call it. We’ve never gotten a triple yolk, though. Wow! I agree with Jenna, that’s how i felt when I had twins. Although it felt a lot better to get them out than to carry them around so maybe the momma hen feels more relief than anything.
We get one of those super eggs every 10 days or so. But have you seen a “slacker egg”? See my blog to see what I mean. It was FREAKY small! About the size of a muscadine grape.
Paige W.
Good gracious! I’ve never seen an egg that big or gotten a triple yolk before. Wonder if it’s the same hen that is capable of that or is it purely random??
Dang. That is one big “ass” egg. I wonder what the box would look like if you had a dozen of them in the same box?

Ouch
Hello April,
The lady who sells these at our Farmer’s Market calls these “Ouch” eggs.
When we first got our chickens, one of them layed a super-egg. We gave it to our neighbor. When she used it for breakfast the next morning, there was a whole other egg (complete with shell) inside!
Ouch. I’m in pain just looking at the size of that thing. Do you do chicken Episotomies?
Dang, that is one big egg!!!!I just found your blog and LOVE it!Have always loved chickens, grew up on a dairy farm, and am working on my hubs for 6 Rhode Island hens of my own…I will most definitely be a faithful blogger bud from here on out!
So, it’s like twins? That is pretty cool. These farm blogs are making me want to live in a gorgeous house on a beautiful farm and play with animals too. Could you tell me the bad parts? Just, you know, to make me feel better.
i don’t think it’s a chicken at all! i think it’s a plot…or a conspiracy… yeah, that’s it.. a conspiracy… by the dinosaurs…or, perhaps just the ostriches. i would keep an eye on that egg!
i love the green ones! when i grew up in MI, our neighbor had chickens that laid colored eggs–blue, green, pink. they were so lovely!! and almost no one ever believes me!!!
Wow, that is one BIG egg! I grew up with chickens and brown eggs, but I’ve never seen a triple-yolk egg or an egg that big. That’s awesome!
That’s awesome baby, yeah!!
OMG!! And this came from a normal-sized chicken? What are those kids feeding those birds when you are not looking?
I get the long big ass egg. About the size of the one in the photo, but LONG. Like one of them laid a snake or something.
Whoa! What do these chickens eat?
Am I the only one that freaks out when there are two yolks in an egg? I shriek and run out of the room crying, never to eat eggs again for a very very long time. Oh, and to find a whole other egg, OH MY GOSH! FREAK OF NATURE! OH MY GOSH! I’m gettin’ the willys here! Gotta go and cleanse my fridge of anything egg like …
Did that poor hen need an episiotomy? Did they take an extra stitch for Mr. Rooster?
I love the big ole double yolks! We used to have some chickens around the barn lot, and I loved to watch them scratch around. It was always cool to get a double yolk. Never saw a triple though, really cool! I wandered over from Pioneer Woman and love your site!
Holy Moley! C-section?
