What’s Growing on Coal Creek Farm

Chives

This little farm is a magical place in the spring.  I love to watch all the stuff that starts shootin’ out of the ground.

Red Asparagus

I didn’t plant this asparagus patch…..I bought it……I mortgaged it.  This is the most expensive asparagus patch in the history of asparagus patches.

Green Asparagus

We are not responsible for 98%….no, wait…99% of the beautiful things that force themselves from the earth on the farm.  But, we are fully responsible for that pig pen you see in the background.  Please forgive us.

Blackberries

We are the benefactors of the labor of another’s hands.  Every year we try to add to the wonders of the farm.  Sometimes I’m afraid we’ll mess it all up (refer back to the pig pen).

Cherry Tree

I did not plant these, but I made six pies from the cherries it gave me last year.

Apple Tree

Again, didn’t plant it.  But I still have apple butter in my freezer, thank you very, very much.

Red Grapes

I made grape jelly and then started an IV line for my 7yo.  He lived on my grape jelly until it was all gone.  I’m not sure if I can make enough grape jelly for that kid.

Peas

I did plant these little guys.  Please grow, please, please, please.

Onions

100_7405

This is first year I’ve been this successful with onions, unjuns, on-yons.  I can’t wait to heave them from that dark rich soil.

Weeds

Just so we are clear.  I did not plant these.  I am not responsible, it’s not my fault.  I’m innocent!

The Boy and The Egg

100_7421 Um, there seems to be an egg in the yard.  Son?  Hey, boy!  Come get this egg!

100_7422

Son?  Why are you wearing your new shoes to mow the yard?  Never mind, don’t tell me.

100_7423

Son?  When did you get man-hands?  Never mind, I don’t want to know.

100_7424

Can I throw it, Mom?

100_7425

By all means.  Throw the darn thing.

100_7426

Throw it hard, son.

100_7427

Mom!  It didn’t break.

100_7428What?

100_7430

Mom?  What have you been feeding the chickens?

100_7429

Iron.  Lots of iron.

100_7432

I’m gonna smash it on that pole.

100_7433

100_7434

Ick.

100_7437

Well done son.  Now get back on that mower.
