APRIL! Any woman who can dig her family out of debt, raise chickens, make her own cleaning supplies, and shake her groove thing for an audience, can learn to do do simple sewing. Cost: needle -- $.ooooo4 thread: $1.50 spool (several hundred repairs per spool) scissors: optional. Use your teeth, cavewoman!
Basics: replace a button, hooks/eyes, snaps, sew a small tear, anchor a beltloop, tack down a frayed bit of trim.
Slightly skilled: hemming by hand, replacing trim, fixing frayed seams.
Look into non-sewing fixes like fray-chek and heat-set hemming.
Okay I'm done chiding. As for collar stays, look in the sewing notions dept. at your local department store, or go to http://www.createforless.com/Dritz+Collar+Stays+3+Sizes+14+pc/pid12965.aspx?utm_source=googlebase&utm_medium=cse

I am a bargain hunter from the get go and try never to pay full price for anything except bras. I hate them and I am hard to fit I will pay full price for a comfortable fit. I found Maidenform online and it fills my need at a comfortable price. I had an old Maidenform bra that I loved but they no longer sold in the stores but they sold it online at like half the price of the ones in the store.
Also for all kinds of bargains try Overstocks.com. I know you can purchase extra collar stays so maybe you can find them on ebay. I wish I knew your address I have some from lands end that I was thinking of throwing away. Landsend Outlet is another good source and they usually have odd sizes left as a matter of fact most outlet places online do have odd sizes left so that may work for your guy. Just remember this is a great learning experience for your kids and remember also "This to shall pass" the only problem with that is that it is never quick enough for me.
