Puttin’ Up

Me- Ugh, I’m kinda tired I’ve been puttin‘ up peaches and tomatoes and corn and tomorrow I’ve got to do some apples.

Confused City Friend- What did you put them in?

Me- Well the tomatoes I put in a bag….

Not Getting The Whole Country Lingo Friend- Then you put the bag up?

Me- No, I stick it in the freezer.

Thinking I’ve Lost My Mind and Prefers City Life Friend- Oh!  I thought you meant you took a bag and planted some tomatoes and hung it up somewhere.
Puttin‘ Up– v.  To preserve your precious garden labors in jars and plastic baggies.

I’ve made peach jam and spiced peaches.  I made this yummy peach bread from some of our spiced peaches.

This is the yogurt/peach/blueberry/ honey sauce I made to put over the bread.

Mmmmm, oh, mmmmm.  As my dad would say, “That’s lurpin‘ good!”

Then I made applesauce and cinnamon apples from these beauties.  This is the first apple tree we picked.  Lord, there are at least five more with ten times the apples.  Help!

Free, child labor.  Okay, I guess I have enough help.
So far this summer I’ve put up;
Corn- from a neighboring farm
Cherries
Peaches
Apples
Tomatoes
I must say it has been a lot of fun, but a bit tiring.  Clay came home one day in the midst of one of my canning frenzies and asked, “What year are we living in?  Is this the depression?”  Then he proceeded to be amazed by all the jars of food surrounding the kitchen.  I have a new appreciation for my garden and food.  Yes, I do think we are living in a different decade out here……until my daughter turns on the ipod to play Cold Play.
